RAW Compliance Awards 2021
Lisa Fine & Mary Shirley have received the 'Diversity Award' in the RAW Compliance Awards 2021
Mary Shirley and Lisa Fine are a team of two in-house Compliance professionals, who seek to amplify the voices of women and provide a platform for them to shine on, as well as a knowledge sharing opportunity for all in Compliance. Their recent book, 'Sending the Elevator Back Down: What we Learned from Great Women in Compliance', fights against toxic work cultures and encourages space and support for everyone.
"As the pandemic has continued and we've experienced a lack of closeness to colleagues for a sustained period of time now, we hope that our book and podcast have helped Compliance Officers to feel a little less alone as we collectively seek to foster business ethics and cultures of integrity, one organization at a time. Though we all work in different industries and geographies, this shared goal unites us, no matter the distance or time spent apart." - Mary Shirley.
"Ethics and compliance is a unique field as we can share resources and experiences in a way that others cannot. So I think that building a community is always important in our field, but it was even more important during the pandemic. I also think that because we started the GWIC community in 2018, it was the perfect balance of being around before 2020, but not an established group, so it empowered people to speak out more and connect. The book and the podcast are a labor of love for Mary and I. We care about our profession, women, diversity and helping people grow their careers along with our commitment to ethical decision-making. So the idea that this has resonated with people has meant so much and receiving this award is so special because it shows that we have made an impact with others and that the impact continues to grow." - Lisa Fine
What has been your biggest learning experience from this past year?
"For me, it has been that sending the elevator back down, a central theme in our book can be incredibly energizing. I was starting to experience pandemic fatigue and wanting to take a break from volunteer initiatives but decided it was important to continue to give back as much as possible. You can set some boundaries to ensure you're not giving absolutely everything of yourself but still managing to pay it forward. Though I was busy and working on a lot of projects at work and outside of it, I learned that it was important to continue to send the elevator back down and as we so often find when trying to help out someone else, you end up incidentally benefiting hugely yourself." - Mary Shirley
"Similar to what Mary said, the experience of doing the book and related projects has remained energizing at a time where sometimes inspiration is hard to find. Whenever someone new to me reaches out with a question about their career or their work, it is inspiring to know that what we did mattered to someone I'd never met, and without fail, I learn as much or more from them as the reverse. I am constantly learning new things that are much larger than just our subject matter - whether it is cultural, work patterns or just cool creative ideas" - Lisa Fine
