For those intrigued by the dynamic world of DeFi (Decentralised Finance) and cryptos, there is an overwhelming amount of information out there: specialised websites with targeted reports and updates, consultation papers, news services, YouTube videos and what not. Abundance of information is not an issue. Digestibility of all that knowledge can be. The crypto / DeFi jargon can be overwhelming and so can be the acronyms used.
Charles d’Haussy, a Hong Kong based blockchain guru, has recently written a book that puts all of this jargon into a snappy and easy to understand format. “Block Kong” is a collection of honest personal conversations with 21 personalities of the crypto and blockchain world. Although from very different backgrounds and origins, all these people share a passion for DeFi, for the potential of technology, and for local Hong Kong dining. Charles interviewed them all over breakfast, for which he (almost) always had to pay in hard cash – Bitcoin or Ethereum being not yet accepted in Hong Kong diners. The conversations follows a natural flow and serves the reader (pun intended!) with a simple and accessible set of blockchain information that can be understood by anyone. You can find out about anything from the history of bitcoin meet ups in Hong Kong, through evolving regulatory appetite on cryptos, to the application of blockchain in gaming. Most of all, you get to “meet” key figures of the Hong Kong blockchain scene through short personal portraits. This book is not about “blockchain in general” – it zooms in on specific passions and projects, as articulated by people who drive them. The determination, the passion, and the creativity of the interviewees are incredibly inspiring. The setting of the conversations in small local dinners all around Hong Kong gives the stories a delightful connection to the grit and spirit of the city.
So to those who aspire to be submerged in the blockchain world, or just want to understand what it is about, get your hands on Block Kong!
P.S. The book is bilingual, in English and Chinese.
